Vintage Mary Juan Maricopa (Pee-Posh) Pottery - Black on Red Terra Cotta Pot:
$56.16
Mary Juan was an original Member of the 1938 Maricopa Pottery Cooperative founded by her cousin Ida Redbird who had revived the pottery tradions of the Maricopas in the 1930s.
Redbird was considered one of the best potters amongst the South Western native cultures, but she always regarded her cousin as better.
The Maricopa Reservation is located on the Salt River and Gila River region just outside Phoenix, Arizona. There are very few Maricopa Indians remaining, and almost no potters among them.
Mary Juan died in 1977 at the age of 85. Her black-on-redware potteryis highly prized with collectors. This piece is beautifully burnished to a smooth, high lustre shine.
It is approx 4 3/4" in diameter and approx 2 1/2" high. This piece, which hasclear signature on the bottom, probably dates from the 1950s.
I am alsolisting an effigy pot by Vesta Bread another early piece of Maricopa pottery.
Please do not pay until I send you an invoice which will include the correct shipping amount. This could take a couple of days. The shipping quote in the listing should be fairly accurate but is based on an estimate from the post office and experience shows it could be off by a dollar or two either way. (Note: Shipping will include approx $1-$2 to cover the 10% fee that ebay tacks onto the shipping charge and $3 for packing materials and handling.)
I am listing other items and will combine shipping on multiple purchases whenever appropriate.
